Typographic Notes II

A favorite of graphic designers and artists, this hand-printed commentary by Swiss book artist Romano Hänni on various aspects of life, some of which are illustrated with design elements, was published in 2010 in an edition of 175. The page pictured here titled “with ritalin” shows a series of small, numbered pill-shaped designs. It faces “without ritalin” which shows a variety of animals and other creatures. This provocative but whimsical book is mainly pictorial with a few phrases in German and an English translation booklet. $350

Behold! The Doves Bible

Published by the famous Doves Press in 1903, this glorious five-volume set of the English Bible is bound in limp vellum and printed on handmade paper. One of only five hundred sets, this is the masterpiece of the Doves Press. When the press closed in 1916, the founder destroyed the type by throwing it into the Thames so that it could never again be used or re-cast. $12,000

By the Fire

It’s not a Yule log, but this 50th anniversary edition of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, brilliantly illustrated by Ralph Steadman, sizzles. It’s one of 52 in the deluxe limited edition, laid in portfolio with original signed print. Considered by all (including the author) to be the ‘definitive’ edition of this American classic. $1,750
