Blood Meridian

A fine first edition in like dust jacket of Cormac McCarthy’s masterful meditation on brutality, death, and the American West. Set in the mid-nineteenth century, Blood Meridian follows the adventures of “The Kid,” who joins the violent Glanton Gang, and his relationship with the imposing and demonic figure of Judge Holden. Published in 1985, the novel was McCarthy’s fifth book—but the first to take place in the American Southwest. David Foster Wallace called it “probably the most horrifying book of this century, at least [in] fiction,” and critic Harold Bloom referred to it as “the greatest single book since Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying.” $3,500

Lawrence First Edition & Letter

A seemingly untouched, as-new first edition in its as-new dust jacket of D.H. Lawrence’s The Rainbow (London: Methuen, 1915) into which is laid an historic Lawrence letter. The ALS to his agent, J. B. Pinker, dated 17 Nov. 1915, reveals Lawrence’s frustration in regard to the police’s seizure of most of the edition of The Rainbow, due to the novel’s sexual explicitness. Lawrence asks, “Must I stay for the proceedings about The Rainbow, Must I appear? … I have had letters from a lot of people about The Rainbow … I want to do what I can for the book. Also I want to go away [on a trip to America]. I will stay if it is any good.” Housed in a custom-made quarter morocco clamshell box. $125,000
