Highlights

One of the featured fine press exhibitors will be Carolee Campbell of Ninja Press, who is offering her limited letterpress edition of Breyten Breytenbach’s long prose poem, The Intimate Stranger. Price: $450.

Pulp fiction fans will want to browse the booth of bookseller Rose Grover, where this excellent first edition of William Lindsay Gresham’s noir fiction of 1930s carnival life, Nightmare Alley (Rinehart, 1946), can be had. When a new edition of the book appeared in 2010, Michael Dirda proclaimed it “a creepy, all-too-harrowing masterpiece.” Price: $375.

Peter Koch, Printers of Berkeley, California, will put the spotlight on the numbered edition of The Fragments of Parmenides, a long poem translated by Robert Bringhurst and illustrated by Richard Wagener, whose five hand-printed wood engravings “boldly accent the text … in vibrant red, fiery orange and velvety black on Zerkall mill paper.” This edition (of 120) was bound by Peggy Gotthold at Foolscap Press in quarter leather and Hahnemühle Bugra paper, and enclosed in a case covered in gold Japanese silk. Price: Numbered Edition; $3,500.

Austin’s Antiquarian Books of Wilmington, Vermont, will bring a framed Theodore Roosevelt autographed letter dated March 27, 1889. Addressed to Roosevelt’s future Secretary of War and Secretary of State Elihu Root, the two-page letter refers to the Federal Club of New York, a political group that supported Roosevelt. He writes, “My dear Root, I enclose one of the blanks at which your haughty soul revolted; but I hope you will sign it and send it back; if we manage it well I think quite a good club can be made out of the Federal; and I think there is room for such a one.” Price: $2,500.
