Guard Your Books

Guard Your Books

The Lamassu were the monumental stone guardians of the ancient Assyrian palace doorways at Nimrud. The massive human-headed winged bull and human-headed winged lion now reside in the Metropolitan Art Museum's collection. You may notice the Lamassu have five legs. That's no mistake. The sculptor wanted them to appear to be standing firmly from the front but striding forward from the side. Now you can have your own Lamassu, albeit a bit smaller, to guard your books. These cast resin bookends, available from the Met Store, would surely complement any collection of history or archeology books. $135

An Inspired Umbrella

An Inspired Umbrella

There are perhaps no works of decorative art more iconic than Louis Comfort Tiffany's stained glass lamps. His work with stained glass revived the artform at the dawn of the twentieth century. While few will ever be lucky enough to own a Tiffany lamp, this vibrant umbrella captures the floral design of the peony table lamp (ca. 1900-1904), which now belongs to the New-York Historical Society. We especially love how the dome shape of the umbrella evokes the dome shape of Tiffany's lamps. $45
