Hike and the Aeroplane, Stokes, 1912, first edition, some flaking to the lettering on the spine (but all still easily readable), else a fine copy in the publishers original gray cloth pictorial binding in bright detail. Illustrated. The first book by the first American to win the Nobel Prize in literature. 1/1,000 copies. Very scarce in this marvelous condition.

Blonder, Leo (Oswald, Wenzel) Himmlische Mär. Christoph Reisser Söhne, Wien, 1914. First edition. Seven large original lithographs by Wenzel Oswald and black and white vignettes. Small, folio, original publisher’s vellum with gilt decoration on the covers, endpapers printed in colors to a design of Oswald, modern slipcase. One of 25 copies of the deluxe edition printed on Old Stratford Parchment Cover, in the special vellum binding, signed by the artist (no. 12). Spectacular children’s book uniting the work of two artists of the Wiener Werkstätte. This book is of the utmost rarity in any form and has never come up for auction in the past 30 years; we only know of one other copy of the deluxe edition in private hands. $12,500.

Beautifully illustrated throughout with Shepard’s wonderful line drawings. Some offsetting to the endpapers, as often found with this book, otherwise a near fine, bright clean copy. Publishers pink cloth with gilt ruled border and illustration of Christopher Robin, Piglit and Pooh on front board. Spine lettered and ruled in gilt. Decorative endpapers showing all the characters in silhouette. In the publishers original dustwrapper which has some darkening to the spine and edges and a couple of very small nicks to the top of the spine. Overall, a lovely copy of this classic. $5,937.

The Encyclopaedia Britannica. A Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, Literature & General information. The Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc. New York.,1921-1922. One of two dedication copies. This one is from the Library of Calvin Coolidge. 32 volumes inclusive of the Index Volume. A fine set in the publisher’s presentation binding of emerald green three-quarter crushed morocco on leaf green linen boards, title and volume details gilt to both boards of each, titles gilt to spines, raised bands, armorial devices gilt in the compartments, each volume with a large serif initial “C” gilt to the upper corner of the upper board, top edges gilt. Spines a little sunned, but a very handsome set. Thirteenth Edition, Cambridge [India Paper] Issue, based upon the authoritative eleventh edition, but with the addition of three supplementary volumes. This set from the library of Calvin Coolidge, 30th President of the United States of America (and the only one to be born on 4th July), joint dedicatee with King George V, “The Joint Heads of the English-Speaking Peoples.” Coolidge’s bookplate is mounted to the front pastedown of each volume. A rare Presidential set of one of the greatest educational works of the modern world. $10,477.
